Don’t be too persuaded by the pleading and begging your child will inevitably put you through! The animal has to be right, for not just your family’s sake but the pet’s, too. It’s an important decision which needs to be made with care.
The Save Bird Project
Ahemedabad holds an annual kite flying festival from the 14th to 15th January as part of local tradition. Unfortunately at this time of year many of the city's birds fall victim to the harmful glass coated or plastic threads suffering wing damage and often dying immediately due to shock. Those that survive are rescued and treated at the foundation. During the festival 3 camps are set up around the city and all 8 staff members along with volunteers are put to work saving the birds. Once transferred to the shelter the birds are numbered to indicate where they were found and set to recover in aviaries. If they manage to return to health they are released according to their number.
Ask the Vet
Q) I have a rabbit which is being castrated in the next few weeks, how long before do I need to withhold food?
A) The main reason for withholding food when undergoing surgery is to prevent vomiting and regurgitating stomach contents which could affect breathing and possibly result in chest infections and pneumonias. Also if the stomach is large this can cause its own problems. In rabbits it is not required to stop feeding them before surgery as they cannot vomit, and due to the ‘method’ by which they digest their food, it can result in gut stasis which can in turn create its own problems.

Males are usually bigger and slightly taller than the females - the typical height of a dog measured at the shoulder is between 28"-30", bitches are around 27"-28". They are a pedigree breed and normally stay fit and healthy into their teens.

Does your Cat Live Indoors?

It has been shown that overweight cats are more likely to develop diabetes or bladder stones. With these special requirements in mind, Royal Canin has developed a range of diets specifically for indoor cats and their particular nutritional needs.

Treacle's Column
Troublesome Treacle
A big woof to all you lovely readers.
As many of you know I was rescued nearly a year and a half ago from The Border Collie Trust by my new mummy Jennifer (she puts this magazine together!). Anyway, I am always in trouble and here I am enjoying the snow we had earlier this year. I didn’t think there was anything wrong with
dragging my mum’s slippers outside and using them to ski but she wasn’t amused by it at all. Some humans have no sense of humour! At least I have stopped eating other doggy number two’s so she should be pleased.
The lady Vicki who does all the design for our magazine has just rescued a lovely boy called Boston. He was at The RSPCA Danaher Rescue Centre and now he’s the new dog on the block. I haven’t actually met him but he looks rather handsome and I sent him a valentine card.
Here he is! We may become an item..

Ask the Vet
Q. My cat is coughing up fur balls regularly is there anything I can do?
A. Fur balls form from the cat swallowing excess fur when they groom themselves. Regularly grooming you cat will help reduce this intake. In addition giving a liquid paraffin containing paste or food will aid its passage.
Give Animals a Taste of the Top Life! You can give Animals Milk!
Many people believe you cannot give milk to dogs and cats. Whilst this is true of ordinary cows’ milk, top breeders have reared dogs on goats’ milk for decades. They recognise that goats’ milk is highly digestible and nutritious and have reaped benefits in feeding it to their litters. Dogs thrive on goats’ milk because it’s so digestible. The fat and protein molecules are much smaller and have thinner membranes than cows’ milk so pass through the body more easily. Easier digestion of the fat and protein means the lactose (milk sugar) can pass through the system more rapidly, preventing a build up which can cause adverse reactions with cows’ milk. Many humans who have an intolerance to cows’ milk, thrive on goats' milk for the same reason.

Join the Animal Health Trust’s fight against Cancer
Charity Factfile Meet Kim Hamilton, CEO The Blue Cross
How long have you worked at The Blue Cross?
I joined as chief executive in September 2008.
Do you have any pets?
Yes, I have three miniature Schnauzers called Hannah, Emmie and Max. I already had Hannah and Emmie before I joined The Blue Cross but I adopted Max from our Lewknor adoption centre. I saw him on the website and couldn't resist!
Tell us about The Blue Cross.
The Blue Cross is one of the UK's leading animal charities. We care for thousands of sick and homeless animals every year, funded entirely by public donations.
How did you get your name?
In the First and Second World Wars we launched a Blue Cross Fund to help animals who were injured in battle and during the Blitz. Our animal hospitals and ambulances on the battlefields were marked with a Blue Cross to distinguish them from the Red Cross for soldiers.
What kind of animals do you help?
Our adoption centres take in a wide variety of homeless animals - from hamsters to horses - while our animal hospitals and clinics treat dogs, cats and other small pets.
Why are animals given up to you?
There are many different reasons why animals are given up, often due to a change in their
owner’s circumstances. In the last few years we’ve seen lots of animals given up for financial reasons, and this year there has been a big increase in stray and abandoned pets coming in. We always urge people to contact us for advice before giving up an animal. We are here to help and will never judge you for making a responsible decision for your pet.
Why should people re-home a pet from The Blue Cross? Our experienced staff spend a lot of time getting to know our animals so they can help to match you with the perfect partner for your home and lifestyle. All our pets get a full MOT before being re-homed - they are neutered (if they’re old enough), microchipped, checked over by a vet and come with four weeks' free pet insurance.
Who is eligible for help at your animal hospitals and clinics? Our veterinary services aim to help those who need us most - people on means tested benefits or a state pension who would not be able to afford a private vet.
What issues does The Blue Cross feel strongly about? The Blue Cross has been a champion of animal welfare for over 100 years and education is at the heart of our work. At the moment we are raising awareness of the growing crisis of Staffordshire bull terriers who are being bred in
large numbers with not enough homes to go to. We are educating owners to get their Staffies neutered to prevent even more of these lovely dogs becoming homeless and unwanted.
What might people not know about The Blue Cross? We were the first charity to employ animal behaviourists. Today, we have a network of trained animal behaviour advisers at all our adoption centres who work with our animals and identify any behavioural needs. We also run a Pet Bereavement Support Service to help those who are stuggling to cope with the loss of a pet.
How can people support you?
We rely entirely on public donations so any contribution or fundraising efforts are very much appreciated. For example, my executive team and I have just completed a 26 mile trek of Hadrian’s Wall in Northumberland as a fundraising challenge. Contact your local Blue Cross centre or visit our website to find out how you can get involved.
How can people find out more?
