Spare a thought for these other mothers on April 3rd
The Mayhew asks people to think about homeless cat families this Mother’s Day
London – North West London-based rescue centre, The Mayhew Animal Home, is hoping that the calendar date, which reminds us all to spare a thought for our mothers, will also encourage people to think about the homeless feline families they have at their centre.
‘Kitten season’ is one of the pressures rescue centres face every year, as high numbers of unwanted litters are found, or left, for charities to take care of.
Although relatively early in the year, The Mayhew, in Kensal Green, is already dealing with the impact of kitten season, with cat cabins filling up fast. There are several mothers and kittens already in residence following The Mayhew’s Animal Welfare Officers call outs to rescue heavily pregnant cats.
The Mayhew’s CEO, Caroline Yates, said: “It is a sad situation that at this early point in the year, we are already feeling the impact of kitten season. It would be wonderful if people could spare a thought for the mothers we will be looking after on April 3rd, and their kittens who will soon grow up and need new homes.”
As a way to address the drastic impact of the numbers of unwanted kittens, The Mayhew offers low cost neutering at their Community Veterinary Clinic onsite at their rescue centre. They provide the reduced rate service to encourage cat owners to neuter their pets so they don’t breed with other cats in their local area and produce unwanted kitten litters. The Mayhew is also part of the C4 Scheme – a consortium of animal welfare charities providing neutering for stray cats in the capital.
